For more than 30 years, I’ve been shouting from the mountaintop about the virtues of veganism and plant-based eating. There’s a lot of information and disinformation regarding the topic, so most people are confused regarding the whole nutritional landscape.
To blast through all the confusion, we need a hero.
Someone we can look up to who sets a stellar example of the power of plant-based eating. The perfect person to take the lead that can change the landscape of health, particularly in the African-American community, is the gentleman soon to be sworn in as mayor of NYC, Eric Adams.
Mr. Adams professes to be a whole food plant-based vegan for the last six or seven years, meaning he eats no animal products whatsoever. He also doesn’t go for much of the vegan junk food out there either, which is probably worse for your health than meat-based products. But, the real reason I think he can be our hero is that he’s willing to talk about it publicly and make it part of his agenda.
That’s rare for a politician to do.
Advocating plant-based eating has a ton of political ramifications. Doing so indirectly attacks the animal and processed food manufacturers, which is a huge part of the economy. Obviously, the big corporations would take a huge financial hit if the general population followed Mr. Adams’ lead. Imagine if all the McDonalds and KFC establishments closed over the next four years of Mr. Adams’s tenure?
That said, it’s politically risky for him to advocate plant-based eating, possibly to the detriment of his political career.
Mr. Adams’s story is compelling. Based on what he has said, he cured his type 2 diabetes and dropped more than 30 pounds by going whole food plant-based. He has helped to transition his mother and girlfriend also and they have benefitted from it. Mr. Adams is a stellar example of what I’ve been talking about for the last 30 years and he can save a lot of lives.
The question is how far is he willing to go to promote plant-based eating?
