The Weekend Entertainment Recap: April 17th

Superproducer Metro Boomin gave Coachella attendees a performance of a lifetime on Friday. The St. Louis native offered a star-studded “Heroes and Villains” style show that featured more than 20 songs. Those in attendance for the performance were able to hear from special guests including 21 Savage, Future, The Weeknd and fellow superproducer, Diddy. Metro Boomin’s set also featured a special introduction from Morgan Freeman as well as a call for Young Thug’s release from prison since he is currently facing a R.I.C.O charge.

Although Metro Boomin brought out a plethora of his music industry peers, one person who did not grace the stage was Migos rapper Offset. While he did not perform at Coachella, the rapper caught fans’ attention after revealing some new ink dedicated to his slain group member Takeoff. Offset showed off his tattoo of Takeoff which displays a portrait of the rapper that covers his entire back. He took to social media to reveal the new ink with the caption, “Love you 4L & after.”

Pop singer Lizzo also went to social media with a message, but her message was directed to the haters. After conservative commentator Candace Owens gave her unsolicited opinion on the singer, Lizzo wanted to make it clear that she is comfortable in her skin. Lizzo had to send out a reminder that she is gorgeous and she is the beauty standard, in a video posted on social media. The singer also noted that she’s “God’s favorite” in her caption.

Another example of Black girl magic is gymnast Trinity Thomas. Thomas took Dickies Arena by storm and became the NCAA all-around gymnastics champion. The University of Florida star earned her 28th perfect 10 of her career while competing on Saturday. Thomas has now tied the NCAA record for the most ever perfect scores with Kentucky’s Jenny Hansen in 1996 and UCLA’s Jamie Dantzscher in 2004. Thomas competed despite suffering a leg injury and led Florida to second place in the championship.

Chicago rapper Lil Durk is also contributing to Black excellence by providing provisions for Howard University students. The rapper launched the Durk Banks Scholarship Fund with Amazon Music’s Rotation, his Neighborhood Heroes foundation and Howard University. Two Chicago students were awarded $50,000 each toward their tuition enrollment and Lil Durk took it a step further by donating $250,000 for other eligible Chicago students. The recipients of the $50,000 were presented with their scholarship when Lil Durk performed at Howard University Springfest on Friday.
