Digital streaming platform HBCU Go recently announced a new all-women broadcast team, the first of its kind.

Created by media mogul Byron Allen, the platform will have the broadcast team cover the basketball games featuring the HBCU teams during the 2022-23 season. The team will be made up of broadcasters Lawrencia Moten, Courtney Tate and Nicole Hutchinson. While Moten is set to take on the role of the play-by-play announcer, Hutchinson is set to be the color analyst while Tate will take on the role of sideline reporter.

The news of the new broadcast team was announced now to align with the 50th anniversary of Title IX. Amended in 1972, Title IX prevents gender discrimination in educational events and activities, allowing women to participate equally in programs men would dominate control over.

“Allen Media Group is proud to honor the 50th Anniversary of Title IX by featuring a first-ever all-female broadcast team,” Allen said in a press release. “We are proud to amplify these powerful female voices and to provide best-in-class basketball game coverage from America’s top HBCUs.”

We are proud to announce our All-Female broadcast team. We see you ladies and are excited to bring these trailblazers to HBCU Go Sports🖤👑#HBCU https://t.co/R2lZKAuoln

The team is the first all-female broadcast team in the digital platform’s history. Launched in 2012, HBCU Go was bought by the Allen Media Group last year. With their purchase, the Allen Media Group broadened the reach of HBCU sports with its contract with CBS stations, expanding the audience to 60% of all U.S. households and 70% of Black American households. The agreement is set to run until the current 2022-23 season.

So far, most of the HBCU men’s basketball teams have gotten off to a strong start to the season. A total of 23 HBCU men’s basketball teams are competing in the NCAA tournament with Jackson State leading the way as the team with the most number of games at six games. The most recent win came from Howard University’s men’s basketball team. On Saturday, the group celebrated a close win over Austin Peay Governors men’s basketball, winning 56-55 against the team.

The match was the Bison’s eighth in ten days. The team’s next match will be on Wednesday when they take on Yale University on Nov. 30 at 7 p.m.

The HBCU women’s basketball team has also had a successful start to the season, recording two wins in the past week alone.

Southern women won 77-36 over LSU-Shreveport on Monday while Delaware State recorded a 88-48 win over New Jersey city.
