For everyone wondering what happened to Kevin Sumlin, wonder no more.
Today it was announced that Sumlin, the former Texas A&M head football coach, was the new head coach of the USFL’s Houston Gamblers franchise.
Sumlin has deep roots in the city and state.
He began his college head coaching career at the University of Houston. In his four seasons there (2008 – 2011), the Cougars went 35-17, including 12-1 in his final season.
Sumlin moved to Texas A&M, posting a 51-26 record in his 6 years with the Aggies (2012 – 2017). There he coached players like Johnny Manziel, Mike Evans and Myles Garrett.
In 2018, Sumlin moved west to take over the Arizona Wildcats program. Unfortunately, things didn’t go well for Sumlin in the desert. In his first two seasons, the Wildcats went 5-7 and 4-8. In 2020 they started 0-5, after which Sumlin was fired.
Many wondered where Sumlin went and why he wasn’t offered another coaching opportunity. Now they no longer have to wonder.
Sumlin returns to the city of Houston, where he experienced his most success as a head coach, only this time as the head coach of a pro team.
