Black Panther to Make His Debut in First Titular Character Video Game

Video game company EA recently announced that a new Black Panther video game is in the works.

Created by Seattle-based development studio Cliffhanger Games, the upcoming project was announced as a celebration of the 57th anniversary of the Black Panther comics. The still-untitled video game will revolve around creating an experience for players to discover what it’s like to be Black Panther. The project will specifically explore what it’s like to serve as a protector of Wakanda through a third-person, single-player game.

Working alongside Marvel Games to create the video game, the project and studio are helmed by Kevin Stephens; previously, Stephens has worked on games such as “Call of Duty,” “Halo Infinite” and “God of War.”

“We’re dedicated to delivering fans a definitive and authentic Black Panther experience, giving them more agency and control over their narrative than they have ever experienced in a story-driven video game,” said Stephens in a statement. “Wakanda is a rich SuperHero sandbox, and our mission is to develop an epic world for players who love Black Panther and want to explore the world of Wakanda as much as we do.”

“We want our game to enable players to feel what it’s like to be worthy of the Black Panther mantle in unique, story-driven ways, and we want Cliffhanger Games to empower everyone on our team as we collaborate to bring this amazing world to life,” he added.

The upcoming video game will be the first to feature Black Panther as the singular main character.

In September of 2022, Disney, Skydance New Media and Marvel Games announced that a new joint video game featuring Black Panther and Captain America is also in the making. Inspired by the 2010 comic book series “Black Panther/Captain America: Flags of Our Fathers,” the project will chronicle the two superheroes fighting against Hydra in the 1940s.

Previously, Black Panther has also been featured in ensemble cast video games. He was most recently added to Square Enix and Crystal Dynamic’s “Marvel’s Avengers” action-adventure role-playing game.  The superhero has also been included as a playable character in games such as “Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds,” “Marvel Strike Force,” “Marvel Contest of Champions” and “Disney Infinity 3.0.”

The announcement of the latest project to include Black Panther comes during the month that the character first debuted 57 years ago. Created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Black Panther became the first Black superhero in U.S. mainstream comic books with the release of the original “Fantastic Four” comic book.

Over the years, the character has been an integral part of Marvel, having been featured in over 200 issues.
