Thursday marks the start of the national holiday, Thanksgiving Day.

To celebrate the day, here are five events to attend with family and friends.

    1. America’s Thanksgiving Parade: The 98th America’s Thanksgiving Parade will officially take place on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28. Located in downtown Detroit, the iconic parade begins at 8:45 a.m. and spans across three miles. The event is free for all to attend and will also be broadcast on local channel WDIV Local 4 from 10 am to noon when it is expected to end. A variety of floats are planned for the parade, including that which was created by the Skillman Foundation student float design contest winner.

    1. Annual Turkey Trot: Held at multiple locations including Hoboken, NYC and Detroit, the Annual Turkey Trot is a marathon that is considered to be tradition each Thanksgiving. Now in its 40th-odd year, the Turkey Trot has participants take part in a variety of races, such as the 10k, 5k and 1 mile, along with other combo events. The event draws large crowds as people flock to see participants dressed in their Turkey Trot wardrobe for the races.

Roughly 22 balloons are planned for the parade with a majority of them being beloved characters such as Goku, Beagle Scout Snoopy, Spider-Man and Spongebob Squarepants with his pet Gary. A variety of performers are also planned to take to the floats to perform. The list of entertainers includes Coco Jones, Dan + Shay, Chloe, Idina Menzel, Jennifer Hudson, Jimmy Fallon & The Roots, Kylie Minogue and The Temptations.
